Pages of history

Before the construction of the Krasnodar reservoir, low-lying lands along the Kuban River were often subjected to catastrophic floods. Attempts to protect residential, farm buildings and farmland with the help of primitive structures from improvised means did not give the desired result. Losses were estimated in many millions of rubles.

Over the foreseeable history of Kuban, more than 100 catastrophic floods were recorded on the Kuban River, which caused enormous damage to the population and economy of the region. Fighting floods began in the second half of the XIX century through the construction of protective ramparts and dams. The work was carried out sporadically in the absence of project documentation and productive construction equipment. The catastrophic flood of 1966 was the last argument in favor of the construction of the Krasnodar reservoir. In 1967 the works were started and in 1975 the reservoir was put into operation. Since then, it has successfully prevented major floods in the lower reaches of the Kuban River and is one of the most important water management facilities in our country in terms of efficiency.

To implement the state program for the protection of the population, the infrastructure of the lower Kuban from floods and the development of land for intensive agricultural use, Krasnodar, Shapsug, Oktyabrskoye, Shenjiyskoye, Varnavinskoye, Kryukovskoye reservoirs and several waterworks were built according to the Institute's projects.

The Institute has developed projects:

  • retaining structures on the Kuban River - Fedorovsky and Tikhovsky waterworks with fish-passing and navigable structures;
  • head structures of irrigation systems with a water flow rate of up to 330 m3/s;
  • pumping stations with a water flow rate of up to 70 m3/s.

The total area of projected and constructed irrigation systems in the Krasnodar Territory and the Republic of Adygea amounted to 480 thousand hectares, including 256 thousand hectares of rice.

To provide drinking water to the population, agricultural and industrial enterprises of the Taman Peninsula, Starominsky, Shcherbinovsky, Kushchevsky, Yeisk districts and Yeysk, group water pipelines and water supply networks have been designed and built.

Over the past 10 years, more than 60 projects have been developed for the reconstruction of the flood control system of the Kuban and Bayou rivers. Of these, about 20 km of shore protection and channel-regulating structures.

By the day of its anniversary, the Institute has become a leading enterprise for the design of reclamation and water management facilities, strengthening of sea and river shores in the South of Russia, objects of mountain and sea tourism.
